Sinapi Aba Trust (SAT) was established as a Christian faith-based microfinance institution in 1994 with headquarters in Kumasi, Ghana. Since its inception, SAT has built a reputation as Ghana’s foremost microfinance institution and is currently the largest Financial Non Governmental Organization in Ghana.

SAT has established eighteen branches throughout the country, giving it a presence in all regional capitals. SAT has expertise in rural and urban credit management and alternatives ways of rural finance drawing strength from over a decade experience in “Transforming Lives Through Microfinance.”

SAT’s primary mission is “to serve micro and small entrepreneurs with loans, deposits and other financial services that enable them to increase their income and help transform their lives while earning appropriate returns for our shareholders.”

As part of its holistic approach to microfinance, SAT also provides a number of non-financial services to its clients:

  • Orientation: an initial 8 week training for big groups of potential clients prior to getting a loan
  • Credit for Social Development Projects (CDS), which finances projects such as schools, nurseries, clinics, hostel facilities, etc.
  • Training such as HIV/AIDS health training; “transformational” trainings which include economic, social, and spiritual; and community service workshops
  • Youth Employment & Apprenticeship Program: an e18 month to 2 years of training with a “master” (baker, seamstress, iron worker, etc). The program pays for a government- certified training, tools and equipment necessary to learn the trade, and a stipend for the mentor/master. Once the trainee has completed the apprenticeship, SAT provides a small, interest-free loan for start-up capital.

Outreach:

SAT offers credit facilities to both individuals and Trust Banks in a variety of micro-enterprises including tailors, poultry farmers, seamstresses, food sellers, egg sellers, carpenters, book publishers, and food sellers. SAT is currently increasing its emphasis on assisting women.

Grameen Foundation support:

SAT is a recognized market leader in the sector with widespread operations and an ambitious growth strategy through whom GF hopes to introduce innovative products such as the Growth Guarantee and Social Performance tools. The GF-SAT collaboration will also include financing, development, business planning, strategic management, and launching MIS.
