Grameen Foundation : Where we work : South Asia
South Asia
Grameen Foundation has supported microfinance in South Asia for more than five years. We currently work in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. In these three countries, one third of the population, approximately 440 million people, lives on less than $1 a day. Because of the widespread poverty, South Asia is a key area for Grameen Foundation to make an impact, not only in line with our strategic goal of providing access to microfinance services to five million people, but also in our global fight against poverty.
Although a number of obstacles exist in reaching such a large number of people who have no access to financial services, each country provides its own set of unique challenges and opportunities. After carefully researching each locale, Grameen Foundation has been able to provide a variety of services from direct financial and technical support to helping our partners develop alliances that bring them together with the formal financial markets. These alliances allow our partners to expand their operations into more remote areas, reaching populations of poor who have long been underserved.
Looking to the future, Grameen Foundation plans to further support our partners with innovative products, like the Growth Guarantees, while also looking for new partners that will provide services in underserved areas.
