Located in Sonora, Mexico, Grameen de la Frontera (GdlF) is modeled on the Grameen Bank of Bangladesh. The organization makes very small loans to the poorest women in the region, allowing them to generate income through self-employment. Grameen de la Frontera’s clients form solidarity groups to support each other through the successes and difficulties inherent in entrepreneurship. GdlF’s headquarters are located in the town of Huatabampo in Sonora. Founded by Marshall Saunders, it currently offers one loan product called a “working capital loan.” To complement its financial services, GdlF also offers preventive health education and life insurance for all its clients. In 2006, it also launched a scholarship program aimed at keeping children of clients in school.
Outreach:
Grameen de la Frontera serves the poorest women in Sonora and currently has 3,353 active clients, with a goal of reaching 5,030 clients by the end of 2008. Their average loan size is $144. GdlF achieved operational sustainability in 2005, and in March 2006 opened a second branch in Ciudad Obregón, Sonora.
